CCAs of NTU 25’: Chinese Dance Club
Written by: Xavier Tan (Chairperson) and Pavina Yeo (Vice-Chairperson)
“I need years of experience to join Chinese Dance”, “I need to be very flexible to join Chinese Dance”, “Chinese Dance only accepts girls”, and other myths to be debunked! Welcome to NTU Chinese Dance Club, a tightly-knit community where we learn and grow together, regardless of background.
Founded in 1994, we seek to preserve and promote the rich heritage of Chinese Dance while embracing modern creative expressions. Through the integration of traditional and modern elements, we offer a dynamic platform for artistic growth. In recent years, we have hosted and participated in various events both within and outside of NTU. This year, we participated in the Chingay Parade for the third year in a row. Since 2023, we have also participated in NTU’s annual Joint Dance Concert (JDC) and hosted our very own Biennial Concert in 2022 and 2024. We will be hosting our next one in January 2026! Do stay tuned :D
Chinese Dance is not all about elegant, pretty poses, and we are here to show you why! There are a total of 56 ethnic groups in China, each having their own unique style of dancing, and we are here to spread awareness and learn about these different forms of dance together. At CDC, we go beyond just learning classical Chinese Dance, which is most commonly displayed and performed. We provide opportunities for all to dive into ethnic dances, with choreography designed to both integrate beginners, as well as push experienced dancers to greater heights. In fact, at NTU JDC 2025, CDC presented 2 items of different genres; classical and Mongolian, and it certainly opened the eyes of many viewers to what more CDC has to offer beyond flowy, elegant, classical pieces.
As mentioned, we welcome everyone to sign up, regardless of experience! While being flexible or having dance experience would aid in picking up certain dance choreographies and technical skills, do not worry as we do have members that have neither of the above, but yet were able to perform and produce a beautiful piece alongside everyone else. We place more value in having the right attitude to learn, and to not give up when you are struggling, because everyone else is there to guide you and learn together! So fret not if you can’t do a flat split or can’t touch your toes yet, all these are not requirements and can be trained as well. We also have choreography for males, so do not worry that you will not fit in as a guy :)
For experienced dancers however, fret not that your abilities would stagnate in this club! With our experienced dance captains and instructor, you can be sure to pick up new skills, techniques, and even have your own Main Character moment in our dance pieces. Depending on available opportunities, you may also get the chance to perform and engage the general public outside of NTU!
Commitment wise, we have classes every Thursday at Nanyang House Dance Studio, from 7pm to 10pm. However, when preparing for events or performances, you can expect an increase in training sessions. We also expect all members to be responsible and communicate any absences, so that the rest of the club is able to practice effectively (for performances).
We will be holding a booth at NTU North Spine during Welcome Week! For more information and resources, you can check out our Instagram page @ntu.chinesedance ! We will upload information regarding any upcoming events, as well as snippets of our training sessions there. You can drop us a message there if you have any questions :)
If you are an experienced (Chinese) dancer, do join us to further hone and showcase your dance skills! Otherwise, do consider giving both you and us a chance; for you to try something new, and for us to provide you with an experience that you will remember. See you soon~
