CCAs of NTU 25’: Japanese Appreciation Club (JAC)
Written by: Li Yujin, President
When people hear about the Japanese Appreciation Club, the first question we often get is: "Hey, is that the anime club?"
Well… Anime and manga are definitely part of what makes Japanese culture famous worldwide, but there is so much more to discover. From traditional festivals and food culture to serene shrines and temples, Japanese culture is full of fascinating gems.
Whether you are here for anime, tea ceremonies, or simply good vibes, there is a place for you with us. At the Japanese Appreciation Club, we celebrate all things Japan, and you do not need to speak Japanese to join. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to have fun!
Our purpose
Our mission is to create a space where students with an interest in Japanese culture can connect, learn, and have fun. Through cultural events, workshops, and exchange programs, we aim to help you experience Japan beyond the surface.
Throughout the year, we host a variety of activities, from hands-on workshops to cultural exchange programs with Japanese students. Whether you want to deepen your cultural knowledge, make friends, or simply try something new, JAC has something for you.
What we do
Cultural exchanges with High schools and Universities from Japan
We regularly welcome students from high schools and universities in Japan for campus tours and cultural exchange sessions, sometimes even featuring project showcases from their schools. Our members also bring them around Singapore, sharing our local culture in return.
In recent years, we’ve also introduced virtual exchanges, making it easier for everyone to connect and interact with Japanese students no matter where they are.

Japanese Village
Every two weeks, we host our Japanese Village sessions, which are casual and fun gatherings where members bond over different aspects of Japanese culture. You might find yourself learning traditional games, trying out riichi mahjong, or diving into mysterious youkai tales. It is the perfect way to relax, meet friends, and discover something new.
Key highlights
Japanese Cultural Festival
Every year, we bring the magic of Japan’s summer festivals right here to NTU. Experience classic festival games like taiko drumming and shateki shooting, or try your hand at traditional crafts such as kumihimo braiding and sado (tea ceremony). You can also write your wishes on an ema plaque or draw a fortune slip with our omikuji. It’s a fun and hands-on way to soak in the festive spirit without leaving campus.

Study, Work, and Travel in Japan
Thinking about living, studying, or working in Japan? This annual event brings in recruitment companies from Japan to share career opportunities, alongside NTU seniors who have been on semester exchanges. Hear their stories, learn about student life in Japan, and get first-hand tips on making the most of your experience abroad. It is also a great networking platform to connect with like-minded students.
Annual Japan Trip
Each year, a group of JAC members sets off on a two-week adventure to Japan, visitingpartner universities we have hosted in the past. It is a unique chance to explore different cities, immerse yourself in the culture, and strengthen friendships while making unforgettable memories.

Our community
JAC is not just about our own events. We enjoy collaborating with other CCAs to bring even more variety and fun to our members. Over the years, we have partnered with the Food Craft and Fermentation Club, Wine Society, and Film Society for unique cultural experiences. From making takoyaki together, to tasting different kinds of Japanese sake, to enjoying Japanese films on the big screen, there is always something new to try.
We also have a close relationship with NTU’s Japanese Language department. Together, we host a fortnightly Japanese Corner where members can practice conversational Japanese with the help of exchange students from Japan. It is a relaxed and supportive space to improve your language skills while making friends from around the world.
