CCAs of NTU 25’: WSC RSP Vision of Hope (VH)

Written by: Abby Cheng, Chairperson AY 24/25

Did you know? We perceive up to 80% of all impressions through our sense of sight - from subtle facial expressions and body language to gestures and movement. Imagine navigating the world without it! At WSC Regular Service Project Vision Of Hope (RSPVH), we step into this perspective and walk alongside the visually impaired community in Singapore; learning from them, serving with them and growing together.

Regular Service Project Vision Of Hope (RSPVH) is a volunteering initiative under NTU Welfare Services Club, committed to empowering the visually impaired community in Singapore. Whether you're a seasoned volunteer or new to community service, if you have a heart to serve and a willingness to learn, RSPVH is the place for you.

We run weekly service sessions centred around three main activities:

  1. House visits: Spend time chatting with our service users and helping them with various tasks. Going grocery shopping, helping them with their electronics and mail, are just some of the things that you can expect to do when on your house visit.

  2. Goalball: Ever wanted to try something new? Goalball is a unique sport designed specifically for the visually impaired, played using sound and touch. Learn more about the game as you assist our service users during their weekly training sessions. Transport is provided for our weekly sessions every Monday.

  3. Soundball: A unique twist on tennis, Soundball is specially adapted for the visually impaired. Join us on Saturdays to assist during training sessions, and pick up the game as you learn alongside our players.

Beyond our regular sessions, we also work with partners like Guide Dogs Singapore to host our special events. Some highlights from last year include horse-riding, a Christmas cooking workshop and a visit to Birds Paradise.

RSPVH has been one of the most meaningful parts of my NTU journey. One of my service users once told me, “We are no different from those who are able-bodied. We just go about our day a little differently.” I had subconsciously tried to help her with a task, but she gently stopped me, saying she could do it herself. It reminded me, and continues to remind new volunteers, just how independent and capable our service users truly are. You’ll find yourself having the most unexpected and interesting conversations with our service users -  they’re always full of fun stories and wisdom!

I believe our role as volunteers isn’t to diminish their abilities, but to recognise, respect, and uplift their strengths. They may navigate the world differently, but they do so with incredible resilience and positivity. At RSPVH, we don’t just serve - we grow, learn, and celebrate every step together.

Outside of volunteering, expect to form strong friendships too! Since you'll be attending regular sessions, you'll naturally get to know the familiar faces who serve alongside you. It’s easy to jio each other for future sessions, and having someone you click with always makes volunteering even more fun and meaningful.

Interested to join? We’re looking for passionate individuals who can commit to just 2 regular sessions per month. That means going for any of our three weekly programmes at least twice in a month. You don’t need any prior experience — just an open heart and the willingness to learn.

Catch us at Welcome Week to learn more, and follow us on Instagram @ntuwsc_rspvh to be notified once sign-ups open!
