CCAs of NTU 25’: NTU Film Society
Written by: Rhea Chalak, President
Welcome to the NTU Film Society–better known as FilmSoc–a vibrant and diverse community. Our society is dedicated to bringing together individuals who share a common passion for film. Whether you’re an avid Filmbro™, aspiring filmmaker, or simply someone who watches movies, we invite you to join us on our exciting cinematic journey. Through a wide range of events, screenings, and workshops, we strive to foster a sense of belonging and connection among our members, providing a platform for creative expression, lively discourse, and unforgettable film experiences.
At the core of FilmSoc’s activities is its Film Appreciations, which are selections of films curated by the programming team with consideration for diversity and holistic representation, followed by varied activities–whether inspiring critical discussion with panel talks and Q&As, or something light-hearted like a game of charades, or our annual Halloween costume competition–that make going to school something to look forward to.
For those interested in expanding your horizons within the film world beyond the screen, NTU Film Society offers biweekly Labs for Film-making and Film Criticism, to give yourself the chance to consider a more meaningful interaction with films and cinema! In Film-making Lab, learn the basics of film-making—crafting your own screenplay, understanding camera angles, understanding how editing can change the pacing of a film. In the Film Criticism lab, understand what goes into the writing and creation of cultural criticism pieces to reflect upon works of art. Labs are a rare and exciting opportunity to have a hands-on and in-depth exploration of the cinematic world.
Exposure is the in-house publication of FilmSoc, where members can contribute and share their thoughts and feelings about anything and everything film-related. Whether you want to write about your deep-rooted love for obscure Southeast Asian horror flicks, a scathing critique of Marvel cinema, a philosophical reflection on the use of close-up shots, or just a round-up of your favourite film soundtracks, Exposure is the platform for you.
FilmSoc in the Wild:
FilmSoc has been invited to places far and wide, including the Singapore International Film Festival, the Singapore Independent Media Fair, and also to exciting and exclusive film previews at our beloved local cinemas! The first print edition of Exposure, Exposure #1, was also just launched in the summer of 2025, which has been sold internationally, including the United States, Vietnam and China, to start with.
