CCAs of NTU 25’: NTU Symphony Orchestra (NTUSO)

Written by: Andria Soh, Vice-Chairperson

Ever wondered how it feels to play music alongside a group of friends who share your passion - where your musical journey goes beyond the classroom or solo practice? Join NTU CAC Symphony Orchestra (NTUSO) and experience the thrill of making music together!

Who Are We For?

Whether you are a seasoned player or someone who just wants to experience what it's like to play in an orchestra, NTUSO is for you. If you play an instrument - strings, winds, brass or percussion - we want you! We hope to build a vibrant community where students from all walks of life can connect, learn and perform, where NTUSO is not just a CCA, but a safe space where we can all come together as musicians and friends.

What Do We Do?

Every week, we gather for rehearsals that are both fun and challenging, led by our conductor Mr Chan Wei Shing. We also attend sectionals with professional instructors who specialise in their respective instruments, offering tailored guidance to help us grow musically and technically. In NTUSO, you get a say in what pieces we play - from popular pieces to ambitious symphonic repertoire, we aim to push our boundaries and learn together, all while having fun.

Performing is a huge part of who we are. We have the chance to showcase our performances, both on campus at Nanyang Auditorium, and at prestigious venues like SOTA and Victoria Concert Hall (VCH)! We also have gig and outreach opportunities for those interested (some are paid!!), allowing you to perform and engage with the wider community in your own capacity.

However, NTUSO is so much more than just music, rehearsals and performances. To me, it is a warm, supportive and safe space where we all encourage one another and form long-lasting friendships. We often hang out beyond practices, within and across sections – dinners, supper runs and even trips (my section once went to JB!).

What's the Commitment Like?

Rehearsals happen once or twice a week — usually on Tuesdays (tutti) and occasionally Thursdays (sectionals), from 7:30 to 9:30PM at Nanyang House. While commitment and regular attendance are important, we recognise that everyone has busy schedules, so sectionals can be flexibly arranged to suit both the section and the instructor’s availability.

How Do You Join?

Look out for our booth at Welcome Week and follow us on Instagram @ntusymphonyorchestra for updates. We'll be sharing sign-up forms soon!

You are also invited to attend our open rehearsal in Week 1, where you can experience what we do with no commitment needed. Do stay tuned for more information!

We're looking for enthusiastic players to grow, contribute and learn. Whether you're trying orchestral music for the first time or have experience, there's always a place for you here.
