CCAs of NTU 25’: WSC Camp OutReach (COR)

COR in Laos for OCEP

Written by: Gan Zi Ling, Chairperson

Camp OutReach (COR) is a Special Project under NTU’s Welfare Services Club (WSC). We volunteer with the Deaf community to serve various beneficiaries and underprivileged communities. We volunteer both locally and overseas, through our signature events, such as Local Community Involvement Programme (LCIP) and Overseas Community Engagement Programme (OCEP).

At COR, we believe that service should be both impactful and inclusive. Locally, we run LCIPs throughout the year, where COR members work together to ideate, plan and carry out volunteering activities. This year, Camp OutReach organised five LCIPs, from festive crafting sessions with the Deaf community to care pack distribution and plant propagation workshops, these initiatives reflected our dedication to meaningful, community-based service. For instance, our care pack distribution supported low-income families while encouraging volunteers to reflect on social issues and develop a stronger sense of empathy and responsibility. Collaborating with partners such as TOUCH Silent Club, Jurong Spring Youth Network, and NParks, we ensured our activities were relevant and impactful.

Local Community Involvement Programme (LCIP)

Deaf Camp is one of COR’s flagship events that brings together COR members and the Deaf community in a shared space for learning, bonding, and service. In 2025, the two-day camp featured hands-on activities such as pottery-making, human foosball, and a friendly badminton tournament with invited migrant workers. Through interactive workshops and inclusive games, the camp fosters genuine connections and promotes deeper understanding between diverse communities.

Beyond Singapore, we also bring our values abroad through our Overseas Community Engagement Programme (OCEP). In 2025, our team went to Laos for 13 days, where we supported a local school through classroom tiling, distributed water filtration systems to villages, and conducted poster design workshops with the Deaf community at Lao Disabled People’s Association. Beyond physical service, the team engaged with local social enterprises, these visits deepened our team’s understanding of different cultures and real-world social issues.

As part of our commitment to inclusivity and meaningful engagement, COR members undergo a training programme in Singapore Sign Language (SgSL), conducted by certified instructors from the Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf). The course equips our volunteers with essential communication skills while deepening their appreciation of Deaf culture. This not only strengthens their ability to connect with the Deaf community, but also cultivates empathy, awareness, and respect for different modes of expression and lived experiences.

Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) Lessons

More than just a volunteering club, COR is a close-knit and passionate community. From our weekly Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) lessons to project meetings and bonding, members are constantly learning and growing together. Many come in with little to no experience in sign language or volunteering but leave with a deeper appreciation for inclusion, leadership, and teamwork.

COR recruits new members during Welcome Week and through interviews at the start of each academic year. You will join us as main committee members and pick up sign language, plan events, and make a real difference alongside like-minded friends.

Through our local and overseas projects, we strive to build a more inclusive, compassionate, and empowered community. If you’re looking for a place to give back, build friendships, and challenge yourself, COR might be the home you’re looking for. Come find us at Welcome Week, and start your journey with Camp OutReach!
