CCAs of NTU 25’: WSC RSP Intellectually DIsabled (RSPID)
Written by: Yap Yong Xiu Angelina, Member
Regular Service Project for the Intellectually Disabled (RSPID), one of the first RSP of NTU Welfare Services Club works closely with West End, a group under MINDS MYG, to conduct weekly sessions for our Intellectually Disabled service users. Our purpose is twofold: to help our service users develop useful social skills, and to create a meaningful avenue for NTU students to give back. By engaging directly with persons with intellectual disabilities (PWIDs), students are given the chance to forge genuine bonds and challenge any preconceived notions they may hold about disability. Ultimately, RSPID offers not just a space to serve — but to reflect, grow and connect deeply with others in the process.
In RSPID, no two trainees are the same — and that’s exactly what makes it special. One might be incredibly skilled at football, another bursting with artistic imagination. Some have a natural curiosity that drives them to try every new activity with enthusiasm, while others observe quietly, soaking it all in. Some thrive in silence, focused and thoughtful, while others light up the room with their voices and laughter. It’s in these quirks, habits, and individual energies that our sessions come alive. It’s not just about the activities we do but also about the lasting friendships that make the journey memorable!
Weekly sessions every Saturday at two locations — from 9:30am to 12:30pm at Clementi Training and Development Centre (CTDC), and from 2:30pm to 5:30pm at MINDS Woodlands Gardens School (WGS). Each session includes three segments: Sing-Along, Curricular Development Training (CDT), and Physical and Recreational Training (PRT) planned by a rotational committee, giving every volunteer the chance to take the lead and shape the session experience
When I first joined RSPID, I expected it to be a one-way street of giving. But over time, I realised just how much I was receiving in return — These experiences, and the individuals we work with, have taught me lessons I never expected. Their openness and warmth made every session something to look forward to.
Beyond our regular engagements, we celebrate festive events like Mid-Autumn Festival, Halloween, Christmas, and Chinese New Year with our service users. We also participate in major MINDS MYG events such as Sports Day and ACID Camp. Occasionally, we plan special outings — from movie trips to a fun day at the zoo!
What makes RSPID truly special isn’t just the time we spend at sessions — it’s also the friendships we build beyond them. As a batch, we’re bonded not only through planning and running sessions together, but also through the moments we share outside of them. From spontaneous dinners and study sessions together to karaoke nights and planned bonding events like chalets, there’s always a sense of community and support within RSPID. Whether it’s laughing over inside jokes or working through challenges as a team, the people in RSPID make the experience meaningful in ways that go far beyond just volunteering.
Every session brings a kind of joy that’s hard to put into words — the kind that comes from spending time with people who are unfiltered, bubbly, and sincere. Whether it’s their infectious laughter, the way they light up at the smallest things, or how freely they express themselves, our service users remind us of what really matters. There’s something deeply grounding and heartwarming in these interactions — and it's what keeps many of us coming back week after week.
