CCAs of NTU 25’: WSC RSP: Physically Challenged
Written by: Douglas Goh, Chairperson (AY 24/25)
Have you ever wondered what kind of jobs people with physical disabilities do, or how they stay active and connected despite mobility challenges? Beyond what we see day-to-day, there’s a vibrant, resilient community with stories and passion waiting to be shared and you can be a part of it.
At Regular Service Project for the Physically Challenged (RSPPC), we believe that Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) deserve to be a part of society, not apart from it. Since 2010, we have worked to empower the Physically Challenged community through inclusive sports, meaningful conversations, and activities that help them stay engaged and healthy, because everyone deserves to be included in all aspects of life.
No prior experience is required — just an open mind and a heart ready to serve and learn will do! Whether you’re passionate about community service, curious about disability sports, or simply looking to build meaningful connections, RSPPC welcomes you in our club where both volunteers and service users grow and thrive together.
Our volunteers engage with service users on Saturdays mornings and afternoons across three main partners: Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC), Friends of the Disabled Society (FDS)
At SDSC, we support para-athletes in Boccia, assisting as referees, timekeepers, and player assistants, creating an avenue for them to remain physically active and empowered.
At FDS, we conduct house visits three times a month, bonding with beneficiaries through arts & crafts, games, and heartfelt, insightful conversations that combat social isolation.
At SCH, monthly home visits allow us to engage residents through games and activities that bring joy and warmth into their afternoons.
Beyond weekly sessions, we hold large-scale events with our partners like Chinese New Year celebrations, featuring games, Yusheng tossing, and lion dances, and unique bonding activities such as our Gardens by the Bay outing with our Boccia players where volunteers and service users connect in a casual setting.
Most volunteering sessions are held on Saturdays, with a commitment of about once every two weeks and flexibility to suit your schedule. Through RSPPC, members gain practical skills like wheelchair maneuvering and disability etiquette, while also developing deeper qualities such as empathy, patience, and adaptability.
When I first joined RSPPC in 2022, I was quite reserved and unsure of what to expect. Honestly, I joined because a friend encouraged me to try it out. I didn’t have strong motivations of my own at the start, as I thought volunteering would be a one-way street, simply giving my time and energy to help others. However, as I got to know the service users and fellow volunteers, I realised it was so much more than that. It became a deeply enriching, two-way exchange. I didn’t just give; I received so much in return — genuine smiles, warm conversations, and inspiring lessons in resilience and joy.
While Singapore has made great strides in creating an accessible and inclusive environment, my experiences also opened my eyes to the subtle, less visible challenges that Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) still face in being fully embraced as equals in society. This deeper understanding inspired me to continue, transforming what began as a casual invitation into a meaningful journey. Over time, I found myself growing more empathetic, more adaptable, and more confident. The friendships I built and the insights I gained not only shaped my university life but also changed how I see the world and my purpose in it.
These friendships and shared experiences are exactly what make RSPPC so special. We believe in building a tight-knit volunteer community. Our annual PC Volunteer Orientation Programme (VOP) welcomes new volunteers, fostering connections through games and team activities while preparing them to engage meaningfully in our sessions. There are also plenty of exciting informal gatherings and bonding sessions throughout the year that members can join to have fun with other members of PC. You’ll leave every session not only with a full heart but also with lasting friendships.
No special skills or prior experience are needed, we welcome everyone interested in creating a more inclusive society. Look out for us during Welcome Week at (booth location) and we’d love to meet you and share more about what we do!
