CCAs of NTU 25’: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Written by: Dorothy Ng, Publicity Manager

One defining moment for NTU BJJ happens at the beginning of every first semester when we watch the newcomers come into their first training session. Most people often don’t expect how technical even the basics can be, and everything can feel awkward at first, especially with how high contact the sport can be. But seeing them slowly gain confidence, move on from their mistakes with laughter, and realize it's okay to make mistakes; that’s always a highlight. It’s a reminder of how far everyone has come, and how supportive our club environment is.

BJJ is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on technique, leverage, and problem-solving rather than brute strength. It teaches you effective self defense that you can use on an opponent of any size. Whether you’ve never done BJJ, are a seasoned grappler, looking to learn self defense or just want to keep fit, there is always something for you in BJJ.

For ladies interested, we understand that stepping into a male-dominated contact sport can feel intimidating. Our club works to create a safe, welcoming space where our female members can gain confidence. Our coaches and members create a supportive environment and are always happy to see our girls not just keep up, but dominate on the mats.

BJJ teaches humility, patience, and how to stay calm under pressure. You’ll build strength and resilience while training alongside people from all walks of life, and maybe even pick up some unexpected friendships along the way.

That said, the club isn’t just about training. We’ve got a club that’s bonded through all sorts of fun activities; chalet stays, beach days, and spontaneous supper outings. Everyone trains together, no matter your gender or experience level, and you’ll find that the club is just as much about the people as it is about the sport.

We train twice a week and sessions usually include warmups, drills, movement of the day, and rolling (sparring) at the end. If you’re nervous, you’ll never be forced to roll. Everyone goes at their own pace, and we take safety seriously. We are a beginner friendly club and no prior experience is necessary. In fact, some of our beginners have taken part in our inter tertiary grappling competitions within their first year and brought home medals.

While we don't need you to show up for every session, training regularly makes a big difference in your skill set. The more you train, the more you improve. We also host additional seminars with seasoned practitioners, sparring meetups, and even friendly in-house competitions throughout the year for those who want to challenge themselves a little more.

Whether you’re looking to compete, try something new, or just build some confidence and have fun; NTU BJJ is for you. Training happens at The Wave, Activity Room 2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6.15pm - 8.15pm. We’ll be at our booth during Welcome Week if you want to come chat with us!

Come with an open mind, and you just might leave with new skills, stronger friendships, and a whole lot more belief in yourself.
