CCAs of NTU 25’: NTU Breakers
Written by: Marcus Cheok, Chairperson (AY 24/25)
Heard of Breaking before? Wanted to see how dancers exact moves and acrobatics with high energy and explosiveness? Look no further to NTU Breakers!
Our Purpose: Safe Space to learn and mingle
NTU Breakers is an interest club to share the genre of Breaking to the students of NTU. We accept people of all experience levels and dancers that are new to the genre also! Our lessons will guide you through the basics of Breaking and the technicality of Street Dance as well – making it easy for beginners to enter the scene. Of course, it can be intimidating at first…but our members will help you ease you into it!
What We Do: Introducing the genre to all
Our Core Activities include basic lessons and events to introduce the culture, and the techniques involved – such as camps, competitions, and bonding! Our club has an instructor – Leonard – that will go through the basics and fine tune your understanding as you go. It may be intimidating to approach him separately, so you can also find our Captain – Zin! Some examples of what we do are shown below:
Competitions (i.e. Jams) organised by us!
These are just some of the opportunities for you to steep into the culture of Breaking and Street Dance. All have their moments to shine and you’ll find yours only when you participate in them. We also try to highlight the different events that are happening in Singapore, such as other Jams or Workshops that are around, so that you can find your way around when school’s out or with your friends. For more information on what we do, you can come over to our Instagram page here: https://www.instagram.com/ntubreakers?igsh=a3kxejg0OTljeXV2
If you’re worried about your physique being an issue, we have the training in our curriculum to build up your strength and stamina over time.
Our community: Involved and Inclusive
Outside of our normal trainings, we do organise sessions and other activities. Sessions are pockets of time to train certain moves with others or try to figure out what was taught during the lessons itself. You can find a few of our members in different corners of NTU just training away, and we’ll invite those that want to come as well! These are the best opportunities to train better and become more involved with the community or even learn something new from those that are training there with you. It’s a different pacing that is more suited to your own cadence.
As for bonding, we have things like Chinese New Year or Beach Day – just a time for some chilling and relaxing no biggie. These are the moments where we just come together to chat and talk about our different lives and experiences. It really is quite a blast to come down together to eat and play – something very different from our own timetable, so it’s a good opportunity to join in! Some highlights can be found below!
Joining the Club: One-time only!
You can find us at the CCA booths during Welcome Week at the Start of the AY! We only accept invitations at the start of then and no other timing unless special circumstances.
You’ll find all the information there and then! There is also a trial lesson to see how it works and meet some of the members of our Club, so you can rest assured that you’ll have enough time to decide.
Your Breaking journey starts here!
Ultimately, this is an interest club and there are many things to take away from this experience – whether it be the genre itself or even meeting new friends and having a community. This club is still a place for everyone to safely start their entry into the genre and have a good time doing it also! You will find like-minded people and together venture into the world of the genre!
We are incredibly excited to see you all at Welcome Week! Come with a curious mind and learn about what we do then!
