CCAs of NTU 25’: Visual Arts Society (VAS)
Written by: Yip Teng Jun, VAS Member
Joining VAS was a funny “what if” moment I had at the start of my first semester in NTU. Since then, I’ve met friends I never would have crossed paths with otherwise. As someone who enjoys Japanese art, animation, and culture, finding Co-En and Aniworks has been a real highlight- they’re full of people who share my passions and interests.
With four sub-clubs under VAS, you can easily join the sessions that catch your eye, but you’re always welcome to explore others too. There’s no pressure or fixed commitment, so I attend sessions at my own pace, which suits me perfectly.
At first, I was a bit nervous about joining because I tend to be socially anxious, especially in new environments. But after just a couple of sessions, I realised how welcoming and friendly everyone is. There’s no judgment, whether you’re a total newbie or practically an expert binge-watching anime at 3 a.m. There’s always something new to learn and share.
Co-En on any regular day :)
My experience with Co-En has been fantastic; not only have my art skills improved, but I’ve also had the chance to sell my own physical merchandise, with the club’s support. We focus on creating a fun, judgment-free space where like-minded people can come together, share their interests, try new things, and simply enjoy the creative process.
On more relaxed days, I like to drop by Aniworks sessions, where we watch a rotating selection of anime films and shows each week. It’s comforting to know that even though we come from different schools and backgrounds, we can all just show up and hang out. And if I’m not focused on the anime, I can still get some homework done or chat with others, with the shows providing a cozy background vibe.
I’ve also heard from friends in the cosplay sub-club that beyond regular meetings, they often get together for group photos at conventions. They host sharing sessions and workshops with guest cosplayers and photographers too, which are open to all VAS members, which are great opportunities to learn and connect.

VAS also organises exciting events, with the biggest being Arts Fiesta, usually held in late January. While every division has its highlights, one of the standout features is the JaM Band’s performances. Their weekly sessions are all about practising Japanese music for upcoming shows. They even run karaoke sessions where you can chill out and sing your favourite Japanese songs. Whenever I’m at Co-En, I can always hear the energy from JaM’s sessions next door, and it really adds to the vibrant, creative atmosphere of VAS.

I think one of my favourite experiences in the club would be the chalet, which is our annual club bonding event!! During the break between the first and second semesters, we booked a house, got together and really had a fun time playing card games and interacting with members across the different divisions. The BBQ was also absolutely delicious.
If there’s one thing to take away: you’ll find not just skills, but a welcoming community where you can freely enjoy your passions. Come visit us during Welcome Week!
