Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced dancer, Soul Funky opens its doors to anyone with a passion for music and rhythm.
Our Purpose: Igniting Passion in Funk Styles!
Founded in August 2008 by Fabian Wong, then a Year 2 student, Soul Funky first started as a sub-club under the NTU Breakers and achieved club independence in 2011. Soul Funky hence emerged to become NTU’s premier popping and locking club, specializing in these two distinct styles of street funk! With our love for giving back to the dance community and nurturing future juniors, best believe that Soul Funky will be your next home on the dance floor.
How We Dance: ‘Backstage’ and On Stage
Popping centers around sharp muscle contractions (“pops” or “hits”) and body isolations. Locking features quick, exaggerated arm movements, dramatic freezing or “locking” poses. Upon joining Soul Funky, you will be brought into the world of these two strikingly mesmerizing dance styles, each rich in technique and culture.
Our training sessions are conducted by Chunky and Marzipan every Monday and Wednesday. With over a decades’ worth of experience (since 2011!) teaching Soul Funky, as well as a wealth of both local and international funk experience under their belt, be assured that learning under them will be inspiring, educational, and most importantly, fun.
Junior Training Sessions (2024)
Soul Funky continually encourages everyone, no matter the dance or experience level, into the spotlight. There are annual internal battles like JuJuSe - a 2v2 dance battle with a senior attached to two junior dancers, as well as internal performances like CAC’s Joint Dance Concert. Furthermore, Soul Funky also participates in external events as guest performers, such as Fresh Off The Groove — hosted by National University of Singapore (NUS). Beyond that, Soul Funky opens the doors for external battle competitions, such as Funk Jam, where our members get the chance to face-off against global dance giants. These opportunities serve as a huge stepping stone for dancers to showcase the skills they have gathered, as well as empower their dance journey!

Soul Funky is an uplifting and united collective that centers itself around supporting each other. We prioritize building core memories and fostering friendships which allows each member to grow at their own pace. Through the years, Soul Funky has showcased itself as the ‘gift that keeps on giving’; with our intergenerational seniors and endearing instructors all keeping the fire burning within Soul Funky throughout the years.
